Cynthia Sax, The Dear Wonderful Hubby And Love At First Sight
One of the reasons I write about love at first sight or fated mates or instalove is because that is my only experience with romantic love. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I fell in love at first sight well over two decades ago and we are still very much in love today.
I didn’t believe in love at first sight before I met him. I thought it was load of nonsense and I was VERY vocal with that opinion. I hadn’t experienced romantic love myself but I was certain people had to be friends first and then progress to love.
Fate made a complete fool of me. (grins) I was visiting a dear friend for the weekend. This friend invited another friend, the (now) Dear Wonderful Hubby, over to watch movies. I saw him walking toward me, an adorable swagger in his stride, and I knew right away he was the person for me. And he had that same flash of knowing.
As they reached me, he was telling our mutual friend he was so thirsty.
Without thinking or knowing to this day why I did so, I asked him, “Oh, do you like orange juice?”
“I LOVE orange juice,” he replied, his brown eyes lighting up.
(I’d eventually learn that orange juice was his absolute favorite drink.
I don’t much like orange juice and I don’t know why that beverage came to mind or even why I asked that rather peculiar question.)
“That’s nice.” I grinned at him. (It wasn’t my house so I couldn’t offer him any.)
He blinked once, twice and then laughed his fool head off.
Our friend gaped at us. He didn’t know WHAT was going on. I’m usually super quiet around strangers and he couldn’t figure out why I was being so outgoing and chatty with the (now) Dear Wonderful Hubby. And he really didn’t understand our bizarre conversation.
Anyhoo… the Dear Wonderful Hubby did get his glass of orange juice.
During the movie, he reached for the remote. I gave him my hand instead and that sealed the deal for both of us.
When I returned to university after that weekend, I told my friends I’d met the man I was going to marry.
One of my best friends asked me where I met him, I told her (this big city).
She said jokingly, “Ohhh…I know EVERYONE in (this big city).”
I relayed his name.
Her mouth dropped open. “I DO know everyone in (this big city).”
It turns out she went to high school with the Dear Wonderful Hubby. And she thought he was awesome, had continued to keep in touch with him.
My friends still give me a rough time today about how I thought love at first sight didn’t exist.
I’m so very happy that it does, however. I can’t imagine not having the Dear Wonderful Hubby in my life.
